About Me

  • Graduate with the first class of Leo Hayes High School
  • St. Thomas University (Psyc. Major: focus on Developmental Psychology)
  • Teacher in every sense minus the title. I am an educator in many ways and have been in almost every personal and professional role I've had. I am collaborative, knowledgeable and resourceful.
  • Children's book Author. I wrote my first children's book in 2015 and then began my publishing company to help others do the same. It's a very common bucket list item!
  • Volunteer on committees, little league coach and other extra-curriculars.
  • Passionate about education, equality and the environment.
  • Reasonable views, humble opinions and a strong voice.

My Experience

  • I'm a parent to a student who has several years left in ASD-W
  • I was an ASD-W student (District 18)
  • I was on a PSSC that ensures the parental voice is heard in setting priorities and planning in our schools. I really enjoyed the structure and process of this committee.
  • I held a Local Teaching Permit and was a supply teacher in many of our schools. During this time I also filled in as an E.A (T.A then), Librarian and Admin. I have sight on scene experience from my time in the schools.
  • My current employment requires a lot of co-ordination and communication. A co-operative team that works with the public.

My Main Concerns

  • Capacity. In our area/subdistrict, our schools have not been built large enough for the growth. Portable classrooms should not be permanent fixtures. Other schools in the district at risk of closing because of low enrollment. There has to be a better way!
  • Repairs. Devon Middle School, for example, is in dire need of repair or replacement.
  • Safety. Physical safety of students and staff. Safety to be themselves, safe environments and safe relationships.
  • Academics. A recent report suggests our students (in N.B.) are 1.5 years behind. Our literacy rates have always been low compared to the national average. Our students need to be set up to succeed. Our teachers need to be given what that requires.
  • Budget Cuts. Last year's librarian cuts were very concerning. That cut, in particular, would make books out of reach in a time where screens are taking over. OR add to the teachers load to try not to let that happen. Full circle lose, lose.

My Open Letter

Dear Community Members of Anglophone School District West, Subdistrict 9:

I am excited to put my name forward as a candidate for the District Education Council (DEC), representing Subdistrict 9. I grew up in our neighbouring subdistrict but have called ours home for almost twelve years and I graduated with the very first class of Leo Hayes High School.

Upon completion of my undergraduate degree at our very own St. Thomas University, I returned to the education system. I have worked in many of our schools as a Substitute Teacher with a local teaching permit, Educational Assistant, Librarian and in Administration.

The time I spent back in our schools allowed me to see the true dedication of educators and the diverse needs of students. Schools have a broad impact and serve as community hubs. My appreciation and perspective have been shaped not only by my previous work in the system but also as a parent. My student is heading into their last few years of public school and I have two nieces and a nephew coming through. It would be an honour to work for all our students.

I have served on a Parent School Support Committee (PSSC) and Grade 5 Grad Committee. For the past ten years, after writing a children's book and then starting my small publishing consulting company, I have helped children and adults write and publish over 100 books. I try to be involved in my community in meaningful ways, where and when I can. Day to day, I am part of the administration team at an organization (Capital Region Service Commission) committed to community service and development.

The DEC’s role is to see that the district operates effectively and efficiently, reflecting community needs and desires. To ensure community priorities, values and standards are represented in local education. I will bring balanced and practical insight to the table. I am committed to our community and supporting decisions that strengthen our students and public education today for the generations of tomorrow.
